„Nuo 1996 Lietuvos Respublikos Seimo narys“
Algirdas Butkevičius failed to win the Vilkaviškis single-member constituency in the 2016 Seimas elections (he finished second to Kęstutis Smirnovas) but nevertheless entered parliament via the Social Democrats’ national list, where he was ranked first. In 2020, running as an independent candidate nominated by the Lithuanian Green Party, he recaptured the Vilkaviškis seat in a runoff election with about 54.5% of the vote.
„Suskaičiavus balsus 42 apylinkėse iš 43, per antrąjį Seimo rinkimų turą už A. Butkevičių čia balsavo 54,50 proc. rinkėjų... Tik 2016 metais po vadovavimo Vyriausybei jam nebepavyko čia užsitikrinti rinkėjų palankumo. Į Seimą jis pateko pagal Socialdemokratų partijos sąrašą“
In the 2008 parliamentary elections, Algirdas Butkevičius was re-elected to the Seimas by winning the Vilkaviškis single-member constituency outright in the first round. He garnered 63.90% of the vote, one of the few candidates nationwide to secure victory without a runoff in that election.
„Per sekmadienį vykusius Seimo rinkimus trys kandidatai… per pirmąjį turą išrinkti į Seimą. Tai socialdemokratas Algirdas Butkevičius, Vilkaviškio rinkimų apygardoje surinkęs 63,90 proc. balsų.“

„Bendras visų... Seimo narių turtas viršija 39,5 mln. eurų... išvedus vidurkį, išeitų, kad vidutiniškai vienas Seimo narys disponuoja daugiau kaip 280 tūkst. eurų turtu“

Algirdas Butkevičius’s wife, Janina Butkevičienė, had served on the supervisory council of the Lithuanian Power Plant (a major state-owned energy enterprise) until 2008. „Butkevičius said that his wife Janina Butkevičienė lost her post at the supervisory council of the Lithuanian Power Plant when the conservative-led government started its term in 2008.“
Unlike some of his colleagues who are multi-millionaires, Algirdas Butkevičius has consistently declared only a few hundred thousand euros in total assets. His family’s net worth, as reported in official declarations, has generally been around the average for Seimas members (approximately €250–€300 thousand) and shows steady growth over the years without any abrupt, unexplained jumps.
