Darius Jakavičius

Darius Jakavičius was born on 1973-11-15 in the town of Šakiai.

He is married.

In 1998, he graduated from the Vilnius Pedagogical University as a qualified teacher of history, political science, and social sciences.

As a newly elected Seimas member (from November 2024), his base salary (for a rank-and-file MP with no additional posts) is about €3,781 net per month (up from roughly €2,183 net in the previous term, due to updated salary laws in 2024).

He served as Vice-Mayor of Šakiai District Municipality from 2019 to 2024; in a comparable municipality (Ukmergė) the vice-mayor’s base salary in 2020 was about €2,692.8 gross per month (plus tenure-based bonuses), indicating a similar pay scale for his role (exact figures for Šakiai were not published, estimate).

From 2006 to 2019, he taught at the Šakiai “Žiburys” Gymnasium as a teacher.

From 2000 to 2017, he was a teacher at Lukšiai Vinco Grybo Gymnasium in Šakiai district.

From 1998 to 2002, he worked as a teacher at Šakiai Secondary School.

He officially assumed his duties as a Member of the Seimas on 14 November 2024.

He is a member of the Social Democratic Party’s parliamentary faction in the Seimas (LSDP frakcija).

He has served as the chairman of the LSDP’s Šakiai district branch since 2019.

Darius Jakavičius served as the Vice-Mayor of Šakiai District Municipality from 2019 until 2024.

From 21 February 2018, he served as an unpaid advisor to the Vice-Mayor of Šakiai District, advising on education matters.

He became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (Lietuvos socialdemokratų partija) in 2017.

On 5 December 2024, he became the Chairman of the Seimas Commission for Freedom Fights and State Historical Memory.

Since December 2024, Jakavičius has joined multiple inter-parliamentary friendship groups – he is a member of the Seimas groups for relations with Poland, Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine, as well as the joint group for Western Balkan countries.

Since 4 December 2024, he has been a member of the Seimas delegation to the joint Assembly of the Lithuanian Seimas and the Polish Sejm and Senate.

Since 19 November 2024, he has been a member of the Seimas Committee on Education and Science.

In the 2024 Seimas elections, Jakavičius won the single-member Sūduvos Šiaurinė constituency (No. 64) in a runoff, securing 55.97% of the vote against LVŽS candidate Giedrius Surplys (who obtained 39.20%).

In the first round of that 2024 election, Jakavičius led the Sūduvos Šiaurinė constituency with about 25.9% of the vote, ahead of G. Surplys who had ~18.8%, necessitating a second round between them.

In 2024, he was elected to the Seimas as the LSDP candidate for the Sūduvos Šiaurinė single-member constituency (No. 64).

In the 2024 Seimas elections, Jakavičius was nominated by the LSDP both on the national party list and in the Sūduvos Šiaurinė single-member constituency; he secured a Seimas seat by winning that single-member race (rendering his list position moot).

He was re-elected to the Šakiai District Council in the 2023 municipal elections, when the Social Democrats increased their representation to 8 council seats (up from 5 seats in the previous term).

He also ran as the Social Democratic candidate for Šakiai District Mayor in the 2023 municipal elections (as he had in 2019), but was not elected mayor on either occasion.

He was the LSDP’s candidate for Mayor of Šakiai District in the 2019 municipal elections.

In 2019, he was elected to the Šakiai District Municipal Council, as the Social Democratic Party secured 5 council mandates in that election.

His spouse, Aušra Jakavičienė, serves as a member of the Šakiai District Council; their joint family assets were reported at approximately €225,000 (with around €135,000 of assets under Aušra’s name) in the 2024 asset declarations, alongside an outstanding family debt of €17,500.

As a candidate in 2024, Jakavičius declared annual income of €40,712 (for the prior year) and about €90,000 in accumulated assets.

There have been no conspicuous changes in Jakavičius’s material wealth in recent years – his declared personal net worth (~€90k in 2024) is relatively modest for a long-time public servant, with no unexplained surges or sudden income spikes observed.

In a November 2025 op-ed, he argued that decisions on removing Soviet-era monuments and symbols should be made by local communities (municipalities), since historical memory is each community’s own relationship with its past.

In June 2025, after the members of the national desovietizacijos commission collectively resigned, he said he would consult with lawyers on how to proceed.

In a 2025 statement, he argued that the biggest issue was not the remaining Soviet-era artifacts, but rather some politicians’ “mania” to turn historical heritage objects into political toys.

He described the ruling conservatives’ zeal to demolish Soviet-era monuments as “raudonarmietiška,” comparing it to the behavior of the Red Army.

He is fluent in Polish (advanced user level) and Russian (proficient user level).
